BPMB Joins MACC on “Kem AMAR” to Combat Corruption Among Students

Kuala Lumpur, 15 December 2024 – In an effort to combat corruption and raise awareness among university students, Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Berhad (BPMB) partnered with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to organise “Kem Angkatan Mahasiswa Antirasuah (AMAR),” making the Bank the first financial institution to take part in such an initiative.

The programme, held from 13 to 15 December 2024 at Cherating Lagoona Villa Resort, Kuantan, Pahang, adopted the theme “Mahasiswa Tolak Rasuah, Penggerak Negara Madani”. It focused on educating students about corruption, promoting ethical behaviour, and building future leaders with integrity.

A total of 88 students from various universities and colleges participated in the programme. Workshops, seminars, and interactive sessions were conducted to teach the students about the impacts of corruption and the importance of accountability.

The students also participated in activities that encouraged critical thinking and connected them with professionals committed to fighting corruption.

As the first financial institution to support this initiative, BPMB contributed to national anti-corruption goals under the National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2024–2028, launched by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and supported Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16.5, which aims to reduce corruption and bribery.

“A 2021 study by Universiti Putra Malaysia found that 14.3% of students had been offered bribes, and 2.5% admitted to accepting them. MACC also reported that 85 youths aged 17 to 24 were arrested for corruption between 2018 and 2022. Although the data is not recent, it reminds us of the important role students play in tackling this issue,” said Ts. Dr. Othman Abdullah, BPMB Independent Non-Executive Director, who delivered the speech on behalf of Dato’ Sulaiman Mohd Tahir, the Bank’s Chairman.

“Seeing this, BPMB shifted our yearly awareness programme from focusing on business partners to engaging university students. This supports the NACS to educate and shape future leaders with integrity,” he added.

Other BPMB representatives included Datuk Rashidah Mohd Sies, Non-Independent Non-Executive Director; Nor Darina Mohd Yusof, Independent Non-Executive Director; Jason Goay Ngee Chiew, Chief Risk and Compliance Officer; Rohayati Talha, Head of Compliance; and Ali Abdul Hamid, Head of Financial Intelligence and Integrity. Also present from the MACC were Dato’ Azmi Kamaruzaman, Deputy Chief Commissioner (Prevention), and Samsul Salip, Deputy Director of Community Education Division.

The next “Kem AMAR” is scheduled for 2025 in Sabah, focusing on the Borneo region.
